Robert Petway is known to have recorded only sixteen songs, but his influence was felt far and wide and included John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters and Jimmy Hendrix. "Catfish Blues" was pretty much his signature tune and was recorded several times by him under a variety of names, as well as by other artists. Indeed, the lyrics and style of "Catfish Blues" resurfaced on perhaps THE most influential blues song of all - "Rolling Stone" by Muddy Waters. But because early blues artists often used the same themes and musical formats it is hard to credit Petway with it, though David Honeyboy Edwards, a friend of Petway is reputed to have said of him "He just made that song up and used to play it at them old country dances. He just made it up and kept it in his head."
