It’s been quite some time since Mark Kozelek’s Red House Painter’s have graced us with an album. It’s not their fault though. They have been knee deep in legal battles, trying to get the rights to the album from Island. Well, finally they have got it and chosen to go with Sub Pop for release. Kozelek’s fuzzy guitar noises are in tact and so are his solemn ballads that he does so well. The album starts out with “Wop-a-Din-Din, an ode to Mark’s cat that he verses like a love song. While most of the songs seem to go on like epics, the music is still first rate. He is able to sing in his meloncolic way and still get his guitar going pretty good. That’s not what he does all along like on “Smokey where a guitar plays a repetitive riff over and over. Somehow the Red House Painters always have a charm that is second to none. Old Ramon is even more accessible than any of their past albums. It keeps the production values of Songs for a Blue Guitar but reaches out to even more people. Fans will enjoy and people curious about Mark’s songwriting skills would be wise to try out Old Ramon as a starting point.
