This CD is full of moody, wordless electronic driven audio constructs and is worthy of your attention.
The first few songs are the soundtrack to an elicit joyride. When you've slipped the car out of gear, pushed it down the driveway with the lights off and oh so quietly you let the engine engage, turning the lights on halfway down the street. The music, already cued in the CD player, is a beatific and hypnotic drone which doesn't readily make you think of anyone as you aimlessly cruise the quiet streets that suddenly seem unfamiliar, presented in this new packaging. Your restlessness is suddenly satiated by the simple act of moving forward, however briefly.
The first half of Fire Kingdom is the strongest with the 2nd becoming more exploratory and at times spare and ambient despite the constant momentum of the rhythm. Both halves of this disc are held together by a common theme, of disengagement and mechanical drive, but the entire work moves along smoothly. There's an emotional distance and detachment where these songs are propulsive and unrelenting and constant.
There's the thing about this sort of illicit adventure. The adrenaline of being caught merely compels you to want more.
