Red Animal War is now one of my favorite bands on the impressive Deep Elm label. I was always a huge Jawbox fan and that is one of the direct comparisons that can be made for this band. They are so much more though. The song complexity on Black Phantom Crusades is amazing. Have a listen to the chugga-chugga rhythm on “Mouse� to see what I’m talking about. They take tricky time signatures and tempo switches and make them seem like second nature to them. Justin Wilson’s vocals are so much like J. Robbins’ that it’s eerie. Red Animal War is where rock music needs to move. The music is far from simple and yet they manage to make it so accessible. They be playing a fairly heavy riff and then out of nowhere comes one of the most melodic breaks ever. They fuse almost a punk-pop into some of their songs to make it different.
