I never really cared much for the Velvet Underground. I know people rate them as influential beyond their time but their sound was always too American Bohemian druggy New York for me. Yet "Venus in Furs" always had an appeal to me wich reached out across the rest of their music. Inspired by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's novel dealing with sexual themes of bondage, submission and masochism. The song features John Cale on viola and moves along at some pace. I cannot say it is one of the great recordings of all time but it is probably one of the best things the Velvet Underground ever did. It is odd therefore that it was only finally released as an a-side single in 1988.
