When Travis Barker, reality TV's most famous drummer, AKA the Neil Peart of punk rock, released a solo album, called Give the Drummer Some, it raised expectations. The cover art by Pushead hints this will be a heavy metal disc with extraordinary drumming throughout.
And then it comes on and we have one dozen Barker propelled tracks of hip hop. Rappers Snoop Dogg, Game, Lil Wayne, Swizz Beatz, Wu-Tang Clan, RZA, Raekwon Lil Jon, Twista, Busta Rhymes and Yelawolf all celebrity wow factor on this CD as does the exceptional guitar work of Tom Morello. And while this is a good hip hop CD, it seems a waste of Barkers ability to mostly keep time; admittedly he does it really well, instead of showing off his legendary chops throughout.
Much of the CD seems to be in one groove more or less, and becomes repetitive. Unlike most hip hop CDs the drums are punchy and warm, and rollicking. Proof positive of Barker's versatility and varied taste he's jumped genres believably. Now how bout giving the drummer some, for real?
