Shoegaze never really took off in the States during the early 1990s. Probably the influence of grunge rather swamped it out as an alternative indie music scene. Boston's Drop Nineteens were one of the few American acts who experimented with the genre. And despite the inevitable attempts to compare any shoegaze act with My Bloody Valentine, well they sound nothing like each other. The Drop Nineteens produced a slew of somewhat unremarkable albums in the early nineties and then split. "Winona", the single off their first album, "Delaware", is probably the best thing they ever did. As all the hipsters were fans of Ms Ryder way back then, the Drop Nineteens dedicated this song to her. Although this is OK it does perhaps give some clue as to why shoegaze never got anywhere in the States if this interpretation of it is anything to go by.
