With the title of their debut EP being an acronym of Americas Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior), its not too difficult to tell that Among Brothers have a penchant for the grandiose. Combining the elegant pianos and breathy harmonies of Efterklang or Anathallo with some of the organic stutters and scrapes that weve come to expect from producers like Kieran Hebden and Dan Snaith, the Cardiff-based sextet are aligning themselves with master craftsmen, and not doing too bad a job of it at all. Obvious comparisons aside, Among Brothers certainly have a few tricks up their collective sleeves. Often a danger for any music with epic tendencies, the songs on Homes never run too long or become self-indulgent, and huge melodies sit comfortably alongside the sonic experimentation, not least on standout track Sam, Isaiah and the Wolf, which will be stuck in your head for ages. By the time the sparkling coda of Great Famine Family fades gracefully out, rather than exploding into tired post-rock clich?, Among Brothers are sure to have found a new home in your heart.
