Bob Dylan's somewhat darker and mysterious original version was turned by Manfred Mann into a sing-along pop song. In many ways the result is probably more satisfying and this, along with "All Along the Watchtower", may be another Dylan song of which the cover outdoes the original. This song brings back a few memories for me. I can just about remember when it first came out and made number one in the UK, and can remember seeing the band perform it on Top of the Pops. I guess this is pure nostalgia then, something from my pre-youth so to speak. But whatever its associations, it was a good pop song.
