The Cranebuilders are (were?) one of those bands who emerge, start to get some recognition, and them seem to disappear from view altogether. Listening to this single again, that is a real shame. Drawing on influences as varied as the Velvet Underground and the post-punks of the early 1980s, "Public Space" is a track which defies genre pigeonholing. What marks it out straight away is that the delivery of the vocals seems almost completely detached from the emotional feel of the music. This provides a sense of disassociation which, when it works, makes a statement and makes it well. Many have tried this approach and few have succeeded as successfully as the Cranebuilders.
But where did they go? Originating from Liverpool, they had a musical pedigree and culture behind them which could have propelled them to success. I am tempted to blame the mainstream but am prepared to admit that maybe there are other factors at work. RIP we hardly knew ye!
