Everyone knows Dave. This is the man who once penned the runaway hit “Runaway Train. And while his band, Soul Asylum may have seen better days, Dave Pirner is about to set off on his own journey. Ultimatum and Artemis music are releasing Dave’s solo debut entitled Faces & Names. Are we in for more Soul Asylum? Well, Dave will always have the same voice but on Faces and Names he is going for more of a soul feel on songs like “Tea and “Teach Me To Breathe. You will still hear a lot of what Soul Asylum has done but the group of musicians that Dave surrounds himself with seem to lean more away from his sounds of the past. Chris Whitley can be heard playing on the album. It may be surprising that Pirner never released an album of this caliber while in the confines of Soul Asylum but after nearly 20 years in the same band, some things end up getting stale. Dave gets a little more personal and experimental on his own and it really pays off. If you were once a fan of Soul Asylum but gave up on them, try Pirner’s solo album to restore your faith in him as a songwriter.
