"She took my love and ran it around
With every single guy in town"
Oh, Sue, what a little slapper you are!!
Of course, Dion couldn't actually say that. Sex wasn't invented until at least two years after this song was released, but we all know now what he meant, don't we? Now, every time some rapper gets up on stage, we hear a lot worse about a lot more girls. But "Runaround Sue" was the prototype - the original 'ho.
After a career with the Belmonts, Dion Di Mucci broke away and went solo, and produced a string of catchy, hook-laded doo-wop pop hits in the very early years of the sixties. And great stuff it was too. This was music you could sing along to and enjoy, without having to think too much about. This was pop music when pop was still innocent (even if Sue was opening her legs..I mean lips..to every other bloke on the block.). Yet within a few years, this style of music would be all but swept away. And by the third quarter of the decade, the widespread availability of the contraceptive pill made Sue less of an oddity than she was when Dion ran her down as she ran around.
