Review By Morgan Corley

Chulahoma, released in May of 2006, features the songs of Junior Kimbrough and was the last album that The Black Keys released under Fat Possum Records.  This album is pure blues guitar and soul filled vocals.  The tracks flow so well that you might feel like this is one cohesive work.  If you're looking for an album full of the usual artistic diversity we've come to expect from the Black Keys, this may not be your first choice.

This is a tribute to a great musician and a way to connect to some very deep musical roots.  Dan Auerbach can croon with the best of them, you can feel the echo of the basement that this album was recorded in and even as a digital copy the music still has a crackling quality like that of an LP.  As with most blues music it's not what words the singer is using but how he delivers them.  “My Mind is Ramblin'” and “Nobody But You” have the most actual lyric work out of the entire album, and that's not saying much.

Most of the feeling you get from this record is from the crescendo of the guitar as Dan “Oohs” and “yeahs” along in time.  The album finishes with a message left by Junior Kimbrough's widow which leaves you with a feeling of how much this album reflects the talents and souls of these two men.  If you enjoy echoing vocals and some truly fantastic guitar work, then you will enjoy this album as much as I did.
