Apart from Sting's echoey wailing across the backing vocal this was actually quite a good song, though it was a far cry from the great Dire Straits stuff of years gone by. And of course it was a world wide hit for Knopfler and the boys, and therein lies the essential irony. If nothing else, this song was about a couple of rednecks in an electrical shop watching a performance by some act on MTV. All the cliches about overpaid rock stars who can't play their music and what an easy life they all had are thrown in here, together with a few choice insults for good measure - hence its recent ban on some Canadian radio station. The irony, lost on Mr. Knopfler, is that the band they were watching was probably Dire Straits.
