Now who would sing a song about paraesthesia? Associated with hyperventilation and panic attacks as well as pressure applied to nerves or arteries, resulting in reduced blood flow, paraesthesia would seem like a stupid theme for a song. Plus, it is not going to be easy to find anything to rhyme with it.
Well, rest easy. While I cannot think of anyone singing about a clinical term, a song about needles and pins/pins and needles seemed like a good idea to the Searchers - and how! Take one classic theme, a guy who has been an idiot in rejecting a girl he pined for in the hope his rejection would make her feel stronger for him. But his rejection has the opposite effect and his pride won't allow him to make amends. Now he's left with nothing but memories and those memories cause him pain - pins and needles sort of pain.
This is such a good idea it is hardly surprising that others have copied it. The theme has been followed by bands such as Smokey Robinson and the Miracles ("Tracks of My Tears") among others while the original has been covered by bands like Smokie. But it is the original which stands the test of time. The Searchers' best track, it remains a timeless classic.
