Paul Newman, even though they haven’t been around for that long, have managed to reach into all sorts of indie rock closets and pull different things out every time. There is no better example than this compilation of songs that have never really seen much recognition. Songs from compilations and seven inch singles make up the brunt of the album. It actually holds together quite nicely, even being in the shadow of last years brilliant Machine Is Not Broken. They can be quiet with lush instrumentals or angry and aggressive, similar to the example of Shellac. Most of their music is instrumental and yet to say that they are just an instrumental band seems very under explaining them. Paul Newman is very influenced by the post-rock that comes out of the Chicago area (surprisingly only one of the member is actually from Chicago). You will hear some similarities to Tortoise as well. They have no problem switching gears mid-song and carrying on in that different gear. Re-Issue may be more for hardcore fans but anyone interested in Paul Newman would benefit from this album. It shows that they even toss out good tracks.
