The Subway Sect had been around the London pub scene for quite a while but never broke through into the wider market when punk finally took off in the UK. Perhaps this was due to a desire on their part to remain true to their roots and stick with the politically-active independent scene, which was nowhere near as developed as it is today. Or perhaps they were just not good enough. There were, by the end of 1977, literally thousands of bands up and down the country who could have been the Subway Sect, so maybe they just got lost in the crowd. Still, this was their best release, though apart from locating it on the internet, you would have a hard time finding a copy these days. Raw and unrefined, and riven with the political commentary for which the band was well-known, it is one of those tracks which will bring back memories when you hear it, but will not ride, unbidden, into your consciousness.
