Cults is a very well made and very boring album. It is pure, careful pop with no left-turns dripping with candy-coated hooks about adolescent love and rebellion. The music operates as classy bakcground noise but is unfulfilling as a headphones piece, which is not to say the production is poor- in fact the band's thick production work is what saves this from being an entirely forgettable album. It's just that Cults sounds so much like other modern retro-pop outfits minus the edge (Sleigh Bells and Neon Indian come to mind). The duo remain flat and predictable up until the wondeful, euphoric "Oh My God," and then promptly settle back into lazing bubble gum. It's difficult, however, to call this a bad album, because even if it's not exciting and clearly not a lobor of love, Cults execute each song with purpose and a firm understanding of their strenghts (namely Madeline Follin's girlish pipes and catchy hooks). So we have a good, not great, summer album that I just might take out again in June, 2012. 6/7
