I’ve come up with a great genre name for the Owls; Slacker Rock. It sounds like a lazy mans rock and while I know that there is way more to their sound that what hits your ears, it’s the sloppy feeling that gets me to the slacker description. The Kinsella brothers (Mike and Tim) made a name for themselves in Cap’n Jazz along with the other members of the Owls. Tim quit to form Joan of Arc and Mike and Sam Zurick took part in the Joan of Arc artsy project while Mike also played in American Football. Zurick and Victor Villarreal played together in the brilliant Ghosts and Vodka. With Joan of Arc dissipating the original members felt it was time to do something together again and to strip back to the bare bones of things. That’s where the Owls fits in to the picture. Steve Albini was asked to man the production helm and does a fine job with the Owls mellow style of math rock. The songs waver and almost sound like they are going to fall apart but the band pulls together just in time. The Owls is a group of very experienced musicians and have come up with a brilliant debut of different music.
