Daybreaker is Beth Orton’s third and most impressive album to date. The reason this soft spoken chantreuse is so successful is her blend of achingly beautiful vocals and subtle electronic beats. She doesn’t just throw any beats in. They are always very well thought out and work to create some very original songs that always focus on Beth’s voice first and foremost. One of my favorite tracks is the catchy “Carmella. It’s mellow but you can’t help bopping your head to it. It seems as though Orton has a sunnier outlook on life now. Daybreaker has more uplifting and happy lyrics as well as overall tones. “God Song features everyone’s favorite guest artist, Emmylou Harris as well as Ryan Adams who is on a couple of other tracks. I still think she sounds like Edie Brickell with her awesome vocal delivery. Daybreaker is still a sombre affair and someone looking for a Chemical Brothers (also appearing here) should probably look elsewhere.
