A one hit wonder, but one which many people I know can still remember the chorus long enough to sing along. I dont what it is about this song, maybe it is the superb sax or the bouncy, feel-good end of work aura about it, but it is a corker of a song.
A favourite memory in connection with this song occurred years ago (Pete, if youre reading, you'll remember) when I was in Hong Kong and having Cantonese classes. Our hero was asked by one of the teachers to make up a sentence about one of Hong Kong's better beaches, Shek O. He thought, and then sang
"Sek O Sa Taan
Ho Loi Si Gaan"
which is a literal, if inaccurate Cantonese rendition of that famous line from the refrain of "Echo Beach". For this feat, he received a standing ovation from the rest of us and utterly bemused looks from the teacher.
