Peter Sarstedt adopted a jaunty Maurice Chevalier style chanson complete with French accordion and a faux-French accent for this song which provided him with his biggest hit. A straightforward tale of the like which has featured many times in literature and song about the woman who lives life surrounded by wealth, glamour and privilege far removed from her origins which she keeps safely hidden away. Allegedly written about Sophia Loren, although it could have been written about historical figures as diverse as Empress Theodora to Nell Gwynn, Sarstedt adopts the persona of the nagging voice or conscience who constantly reminds the socialite who she is. Yet, unlike many other songs with this theme, it is delivered without a hint of bitterness or malice. It is simply a description -" I know and that knowledge reminds you as well" and not a threat - "I know and I'll tell". If I recall there was a film, ironically starring Sophia Loren, which came out around the same time and had exactly the same theme.
