The amazing Fire In The City of Automatons was my introduction to the great music of No Knife. While they have trouble avoiding comparisons to the DC type bands like Fugazi and more appropriately, Jawbox they have proven that they are reaching beyond those confines with Riot For Romance. This is the long awaited follow-up to Fire and after a quick listen you can tell that it was well worth the wait. No Knife really fires on all cylinders here and provide a very angular listen that surprises on a few fronts. Their sound may be signature DC sound but surprisingly enough, they are from San Diego. While No Knife still provide their full-on post-rock sound, they tend to slow down a little more on Riot to provide some mellower food for thought. It’s quite welcome too and just adds another dimension to this already impressive band. The album closer “This Moonlife is a perfect example of the quietness that No Knife is capable of. If you enjoy almost any aspect of guitar rock, you need to at least venture down to your local independent record store and ask to have a listen to Riot for Romance. That’s really all I ask. I’m considering this album for my Best Of 2002 list.
