When you first begin listening to Holy Shit, the new album from Vancouver-based quintet Living With Lions, it comes across as an impressive satirical commentary on the mediocre state of what passes for 'alternative rock' nowadays. A couple of songs in however, and you come to the stark realization that these guys are actually serious.
Living With Lions leave no cliche unused as they blast through their bland fifth-generation Face To Face imitation.
Slick, sanitized guitars? Check. Bellowing, overly earnest vocals? Check. Banal lyrics that convey the woe in their lives? Check. Requisite punk drum roll to prove they're tough? Check.
There is at least one bright spot as "Honestly, Honestly" is vaguely catchy.
When all is said and done we're left with an album that really didn't need to exist. There's precious little that separates Living With Lions from hundreds of other run-of-the-mill Emo bands.
Holy shit indeed.
