I always found the A-Side rather forgettable. This days it sounds dated and incredibly sexist. The B-side was altogether different. Thin Lizzys Irish nationalist song kicks off with the line

"Down from the glen
Came the marching men"

And then proceeds to describe how the soldiers set about destroying what they had found. On that basis, this could be about any conflict you care to name from Xerxes attempted conquest of Greece to the 101st Airborne going into Falluja. You only link it with Ireland through the title of the song as the Emerald Isle is a frequent metaphorical, description of that island. Politics aside, it is a good rocker, made worthy of a place in the sun by the excellent guitar work which underpins it.

Rockers were never that good at politics, perhaps because it was so difficult to relate the trials and tribulations of the ordinary man to drug-addled stadium rockers. Or perhaps because rock was all about fantasy and escapism. People did not go to a rock concert to be reminded of how shit life was.
