I am completely unsure as to if this should even be categorized as Hip Hop or not. Gorillaz could easily fit into a rock category or even electronica for that matter. Let me explain. Gorillaz is yet another one of Dan The Automator’s ideas reaching reality. He is the brains behind other great projects like Handsome Boy Modeling School, Deltron 3030, Dr. Octagon, and the Bombay the Hardway soundtrack. This time around he has enlisted Blur’s Damon Albarn to help him out so you can see right there the rock influences. He also calls upon his regular contributors Del tha Funky Homosapien and Kid Koala as well as Cibo Matto's Miho Hatori, and the Tom Tom Club's Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz. He has also enlisted Jamie Hewlett, the artist responsible for Tank Girl to come up with caricatures for the band. Is this all just hype and a bunch of names rolled up to make a disc sell? No, not at all. Dan has come up with his best concept yet (I have no idea how Dan keeps all his aliases straight). The album rocks and there is more than just a couple stellar tracks here. Damon ends up stealing the show for the most part but the rest of the contributors get their fair share as well. Gorillaz just proves that Damon is more talented than what Blur would make you believe and it is just one more brilliant project from Dan The Automator.
