Big Sugar - Five Hundred Pounds
Another classic Canadian album that should be in everyone's collection; Canadian or not. Gordie Johnson and his blues crew Big Sugar hit their high point with Five Hundred Pounds. As of late Gordie and his gang have resorted to a bit of a dub feel, most likely due to the addition of their new Rastafarian bass player. Back in the day a Big Sugar show used to be the highlight of my month. Gordie can make his guitar sing and when he plays it's like he's playing what damn thing wants to play. Asides from Big Sugar's own fine material Gordie chose some doozies like Al Green's "I'm a Ram" (my favorite on 500 pounds), the traditional tracks "Sugar In My Coffee", "How Many Times", and the amazing "Wild Ox Moan" (Gordie shows off what a great vocal range he has). Yeah, listening to Five Hundred Pounds is like sucking on the finest Belgian chocolate. It goes down smooth.
