Forget all those crummy artists labelled folk-punk; Mark Ayling is one of the vanishingly small numbers of artists that have ANY punk spirit at all. The songs are angry but tuneful and bear no resemblance to the hundreds of singers that appear to define this genre. The lyrics are well crafted and the music infused with a controlled aggression that makes other folk punk artists sound as lame as the influences they quote. Conversely, his Ballad Of Logie Buchan on the debut album Memories and Ghosts is a raw, emotional masterpiece.
Theres no fiddly, twinky showing off on guitar but he manages to make one man and his guitar sound as powerful as a rock band. Looking forward to seeing how this artist develops!
