Alternative Ulster is indeed one of the best punk songs to come out of the genre in the 70's. If you haven't heard this song, educate yourself, download it, and listen to it.

Stiff Little Fingers were Belfast punks who made an issue out of the British Army's presence in Northern Ireland during what was euphemistically called The Troubles. A good enough rallying cry for the disaffected anti-establishment youth of the Province, whatever side of the politico-religious persuasion they lay on - and that non-sectarian message was at the heart of this track. Sadly, the sectarian divide in Northern Ireland was one too rigid and too entrenched for music to break down. "Alternative Ulster" was a good stomp along number, but bereft of any real musical ability. The B-Side, "78 R.P.M.", was more up-tempo, but the vocals degenerated into little more than shouting very quickly. Still, an iconic single from a band who very quickly became totems for the disaffected youth of Northern ireland.
