At the time this emerged into the UK charts, punk was on the verge of altering the music scene and glam rock, of which this is a late bloomer, was on its last legs. What appealed about this song was quite simple - it was beyond risque it was almost pornographic (or so I considered at the time). Occasionally we would snigger at the naivety of the mainstream which would let Lou Reed sing about giving head on "Walk on the Wild Side" because they didn't know what it meant. Come to that, as a twelve year old, neither did I. I just knew it meant something which shouldn't be said because older boys at school told me so. "Romeo" was kind of in that vein. With references to coming inside the by now seventeen year old me knew exactly what it meant and couldn't figure out why the mainstream was still being naive. Whatever, for 1977 it was pretty good to have a chart song that wasn't unrelenting pap.
