You may remember John Forte from the Fugees but he is making a name for himself (namely as a prison inmate). I, John is his sophomore solo album and was penned while he was awaiting trial for possessing copious amounts of cocain. Where his debut, Poly Sci succeeded was in it’s fun nature and clever word play. Forte claims that he was young and niave when he wrote that album but upon the release of I, John he has come to grips with a lot more of life. This album is very melodic and brilliant like the work he did with the Fugees. He has brought quite a few people into the studio to work with including Carly Simon, Dinah Washington (who provided the amazing vocals on album opener “What A Difference), Tricky (on one of his best tracks of late “Trouble Again), Esthero and Jeni Fujita. I, John shows someone looking at what life means in this big, strange world we live in. Take the ballad (yes, not even a rap on the song) “All The Pretty People where John reflects on what he is and where he fits in. Don’t worry because there are plenty of Forte-styled rhymes on the album and it really is some of his strongest material to date.
