After being dropped from 2 big labels, someone finally saw something the others couldn't: A gimmick. Commercial music is really at a horrible state right now. Especially with all the heavy weights on hiatus right now. But I honestly think that she just isn't versatile enough to be compared to the heavy weights just yet. She is mostly catering to gay nightclubs which isn't a bad thing. But the music isn't ambient or dark enough to be compared to Madonna. And nor is it creative enough to be compared to any of the heavy weights in the past. I would love to hear her branch out more and try new things.
But in all honesty I don't think Madonna would have chosen any of these tracks. She is way far beyond this style of music. If you go back to her work with William Orbit. It was far more innovative than this and that was over 10 years ago. Not to mention her work with Mirwais Ahmadza? it was amazing! And this was many many years back so Gaga has some catching up too do. Listen to Evil by LADYTRON and that was in 2004. So basically what I am saying once again, she has a lot of catching up too do. Also if you have time check out there new song LADYTRON-Little Black Angel. Ladytron and Miss Kitten are Miles ahead of Lady GaGa from a production and song structure standpoint. Probably some of the most advanced ahead of their time groups out there. Ladytron's new album "Gravity the Seducer" will soon be out and its more ambient according too them.
Of course, I'm more of an acoustic fan these days. Check out The Roccos when you get a chance.

Sadly, this album is a "guilty pleasure" of mine. I really enjoy the pop hooks and dance-ability of Lady Gaga. That is, up until that new single "Born This Way" which is a complete rip off of Madonna.

With the rise of Lily Allen and Katy Perry one could have hoped that the era of the pop bimbo, a la Britney Spears was at last drawing to a close, or at the very least, coalescing into girl groups it would always be safe to ignore. So, just when you thought it might be safe to switch on the radio, along comes Lady Gaga.

To her credit, and I won't often say this about a pop bimbo (indeed I CAN'T often say this about a pop bimbo) she writes her own stuff. That will get her that extra star. But the truth is, that there is writing music and writing music, if you know what I mean. Some people, like Mozart, Mike Scott, John Watts write music. Lady Gaga writes, well music of a sort. But it is so banal, so cliched, so devoid of any passion or feeling that I wouldn't be surprised if writing actually meant using Personal Composer 8 Stave to manipulate sounds produced by a laptop and checking the end result for effect with the neighbourhood feral cats.

But this would not be the first and will not be the last album that is poorly written. What compounds the error is that she then has the bare-faced cheek (or, given her media persona, her bare-cheeked cheek) to actually perform this. Now even I could use Personal Composer 8 Stave but I know that I cannot sing. I guess I could if I had one of those vocal synthesisers Posh Spice was so fond of to cover up her own lack of talent, but as a generality, I cannot sing. Now Lady Gaga can not only not sing in the same sense that I can't, but she can actually go one worse than Posh Spice and not sing even when her voice is put through a vocal synthesiser. She can't even hold a key with digital manipulation of her voice and that takes real talent to be THAT bad.

The result is that this is the sort of thing which makes you squirm with embarrassment at karaoke evenings. I cannot for the life of me think what possessed me to check this out. I must have known I wasn't going to like it. I guess music is like wine. In order to appreciate that 2005 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Paulliac as much as a 4500 quid a bottle vintage wine deserves, you should experience the dubious delights of Tesco Bulgarian Merlot first: a sort of reverse bathos: from the ridiculous to the sublime.

In short then, this is an album which is so badly written and so badly performed that I could have done it - and probably done a better job of it. She should stick to what she does best - turning up to nightclubs half-dressed and wiggling her arse for the paps before falling pissed out the same club at 4 a.m.

Now if we could only get her to fall on Lily Allen we could kill two birds with one stone (geddit?)
