In the early days of the Cure, when the band were struggling to leave their punk roots behind, the sound of the band was still evolving towards the more gloomy, doom-laded music beloved by Goths. "Boys Don't Cry" is undoubtedly the best of what is an admittedly patchy output from the band at this time. Robert Smith had not yet developed the theatrical pretension which would gain him some unwelcome (and largely undeserved) criticism later. This was a catchy riff dressed up as a pop song which made no impact whatsoever on the UK pop charts. Ah, such is life and the corrupt vagaries of mainstream UK radio.
