Without doubt this was the Tremeloes' greatest hit and the song for which they will most frequently be remembered. A slow melody is coupled with some fine vocal harmonies to produce a mellow and soothing effect to the song. It continued a theme for which the Tremeloes had worked hard to develop of producing a soft middle of the road ballads with a wide appeal. The problem with such approach is that it skirts the very edges of blandness and mediocrity and all too frequently the Tremeloes slipped across that line. However, with Silence Is Golden they trod the line very well and created a memorable number which still stands the test of time today.
