Saving the Music
Saving the Music, 14 songs by Chris Ahlman is at once a hopeful and slightly unnerving recording.
The really remarkable songs, title track Saving the Music, This One, and It's All the Same, are outstanding. Well produced, memorable, and point to Ahlmans potential of being a songwriter to contend with, along the lines of Angie Aparo or Ryan Adams. There's a plaintive and earnest quality to his voice which on the stand out tracks works.
On the less interesting material, it gets lost in the mix. As a singer-songwriter, Ahlman presents these songs acoustically. If Ahlman stepped outside himself a little, taking some chances with the arrangements, and pacing, or collaborated with a producer, these other songs might shine brighter, and soon there will be a much larger conversation about Ahlman himself and all the artists rushing to record his songs to give themselves as sense of gravitas.
Once Ahlman steps up his game, the road will undoubtedly rise up to meet him, and there will be a clamoring to hear all he has to say. Chris Ahlman wins This One, but just barely. It's time get his game face on and show he means business.
