Mr. Ballbeam, AKA Beans, is back with his first album of so-called solo material. With the sad dissolution of Anti-Pop Consortium, the various members were left collecting their thoughts and heading out on their own. Beans seems to have bounced back very nicely with his new contract with Warp records. His music is a little different than that of APC in that it’s got a lot more electro-beats happening. Some of the rhythms and samples are difficult to access but Beans’ great rapping hold the listener by maintaining a cohesive feel. After a couple listens Tomorrow Right Now becomes addictive. I even found myself singing along to a couple of tracks (“Phreek the Beet, “Slow Broken). The guests on Tomorrow Right Now read like a who’s who of underground music: Bill Laswell, labelmate Prefuse 73, Vernon Reid, Funkstorung, Mike Ladd, Arto Lindsay, New Flesh, the amazing pianist Matthew Shipp, DJ Spooky, Terranova, Aceyalone, and of course, DJ Shadow. Some of the tracks on Tomorrow are really dark but for the most part Beans keeps a light-hearted feel to the album. Tomorrow Right Now shows that Beans was a integral part of the success of Anti-pop Consortium.
