Bowie had always wanted to be famous and was seemingly prepared to adapt to any musical style which would bring him that fame. After some disastrous early singles - "The Laughing Gnome" anyone? - he finally found a path to that much desired fame with "Space Oddity". Coming out in the same year as the first moon landing, "Space Oddity" brought the character Major Tom to the world's attention and then created a fate for him to serve as a warning to those carried away with the new possibilities Messers. Armstrong and Aldrin had opened up. Musically, this was rooted in the hippie psychedelia which was prevalent at the time, but the song retained enough of the dreamy and airy quality to ensure that it has stood the test of time.
