The Boomtown Rats were never given the credit they might have wished for, and never got taken as seriously as they might have deserved. If so, that fault was entirely theirs. Undeniably punk, yet without any of the aggressively snarling attitude which affected others, the Rats were above all a fun band. They seemed to have as much of a good time making their music as others did listening to it. As a result, I always had a soft, if somewhat un-street-credible, spot for the Boomtown Rats.
"Mary of the Fourth Form" was the single that brought them to the attention of most. And with a title like that it was pretty clear who the market was going to be. At the time I pitied anyone called Mary who was in the fourth form for the stick they would get. But this was the Rats at their best. A catchy melody delivered with Geldof's sometimes inaudible lyrics but above all full of energy. Maybe the Rats did not want themselves to be taken seriously. Maybe they are right and a lot of us are wrong.
