This is one of those singles where the b-side is far more interesting than the a-side. "Stand down Margaret" was a direct plea to Margaret Thatcher to quit. Now that was something that was always going to get a good listening to on my part. An excellent ska track, the Beat politely asked the old cow to step aside as the impact of her policies was beginning to bite. Whether they though that, if they were polite they'd get a hearing, I don't know, but I'm pretty certain if they had titled this "Fuck off Thatcher" (as perhaps they should have done) then it would never have got airplay. As it was, it had to be released as a b-side because Radio One would never play such an overtly political song.
Still, the bitch has left power long ago. And though her baleful legacy continues to hang over this country like a death shroud it is time the song was updated - "Stand down David".
