The Adverts were never more than a second tier punk band who produced one reasonable album and one very memorable single. For those who don't know, the eponymous character of the a-side was an American murderer who petitioned the Supreme Court for his death sentence to be carried out - and won. If famous for nothing else, he is responsible for America once again turning to the practice of judicial state-murder and joining the ranks of such human rights luminaries as Saudi Arabia, Iran and China. This may well have been forgotten had not the Adverts decided to immortalise him, and his request that his eyes be used for human transplantation.
But hell this song was this catchy. The political significance may be lost now, but this was how to bring punk close to the mainstream for when this was issued it was big news at the time. It is a pity that the band could never really build on this.
