When thinking of indie music, it's usually a bad ass rock band or funky electronic outfit that comes to mind first. That doesn't seem to bother new up and coming country western artist Laura Roppe. Far from being another typical southern performer, her sophomore release I'm Still Here asks for attention and rewards with originality.
Laura's story involves leaving the safety, stability, and success of both her career as a lawyer and as a successful cover band member. Eventually her passion for making music overcame her desire to pursue anything else, and she began to write and record her own songs. It wasn't long after this time that she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to have chemotherapy. This album is the retrospective result of that process.
As you could probably guess, the record is a rollercoaster ride of deep, flowing emotions. Then again, which country record isn't? I'm Still Here begins with a twangy, fast paced song called "Bail Yourself Out". She sings with authenticity of the importance of personal responsibility and not being a victim. "Heart Inside Your Palm" is a quirky tune but shows off some of Roppe's vocal capabilities.
While being classified as country, some of these songs are very pop oriented while others sound more Latin than western (like the song "Little Sick of Dynamite"). Two highlights include "Making A Living" and "George Clooney". The first is how working can get in the way of living life. The later is the artist's most popular song yet about fulfilling life's dreams and not giving up--she should know firsthand.
All in all, this is a great effort from an emerging and talented musician. Overall, the recording is generally upbeat and positive. So you don't have to ignore it if you aren't a fan of stereotypical sad and depressing country music.
