I needed this; one of those albums that come right out of the blue, give you a swift uppercut, and become one of your favorite albums, completely by surprise. I still think that Murry the Hump picked a god-awful name (it’s from the Welsh gangster who was Al Capone’s henchman) but that may be the reason that this album was so unexpected. The Hump comes to us from Cardiff Wales, which is not that surprising with all of the bands that are coming out of Wales lately. From what I can tell, The Hump is a three piece as well with lots of help from friends and fellow musicians. The music could be the long lost cousin of Travis although Murry has a much more diverse sound to them. Songs come up and sound like they are on the verge of breaking into an out of control mess but are harnessed to create a very exciting sound. Hell, they even take a crack at a country sound with “Colouring Book, albeit not very successful in the country vein. For the most part though, Murry the Hump is content just playing gentle pop songs that don’t demand attention. It’s one of those albums that you hear in the background at the local pub and you have to know who the artist is at any cost. They remind this reviewer of Supergrass without the bubbly playfulness. Murry The Hump will have to reside in my disc carousel for a few more weeks before it gets filed.
