I can’t say that I was excited to hear that Bob Mould had gone “electronica but I was happy to hear that Bob was back from his semi retirement. You see, Mould had taken up the position as a creative consultant for a wrestling TV show. Now that Bob’s back with a brand new bag, namely synthesizers and samplers, we are treated to his always interesting and unique songwriting (yes, even The Last Dog and Pony Show held a few treats). As I sit back and digest this 14 track opus I realize that we haven’t lost all that is Bob. He hasn’t changed that much. He’s only really given up the loud guitar (not the guitar completely). When you listen to tracks such as “soundonsound and “The Receipt you can tell that Mould’s much needed break has paid off. They are two of the best Bob Mould penned songs to date, even without the guitar. He keeps the rock style drums on these tracks and the vocals are delivered with firey passion. Yes, there are experimental songs on here that Bob gets a little crazy with the sampler but be rest assured that Bob hasn’t strayed too far. If anything, Bob Mould has found his love for music once again. A sidenote, Bob has started up his own label entitled Granary Music that Modulate has been released on. I would hope that more crazy and inventive music would come from Bob Mould in the near future.
