I don't at all hesitate to call this Deerhunter's best release to date. From beginning to end, even down to the cover art, it's one of those few releases that simply couldn't be better. Cox's writing seems all the more sure of itself, allowing it to flow loosely. Such as with songs like "Helicopter" or "Basement Scene", the minimalist instrumentation gives his droning melodic voice space to reverberate through our thoughts with feelings of nostalgia. Even "Sailing"; which is strictly guitar and vocals, interlaced subtley with simple percussion, finds a way to burrow into our darkest emotional corners and shine a tiny light inside. This release also features a more prominent input from Lockett Pundt, who sings on perhaps the album's strongest track "Desire Lines".
One thing is for sure, the future of rock music is certainly secured as long as bands such as Deerhunter are pressing on.
