How does a band follow-up the best album of their career and one of the highlights of indie rock in the past decade? I am of course talking about Mercury Rev’s superb Deserter Songs. All is Dream is their attempt to do just that and although they don’t top Deserter Songs they venture off and do something a bit different. All Is Dream comes off a bit more orchestral than Deserter Songs. The arrangements are lush and beautiful will little sign of weakness. There are string sections arranged all over the album and you can tell that Jonathan Donahue is enjoying their change in direction. For those of you who have been following Mercury Rev for a while will know that Jonathan wasn’t always the primary vocalist. He would share duties with David Baker who left after the album Boces. Jonathan is finding out that he is a very talented and creative songwriter and is not afraid to try new things. All Is Dream is a fine album that Mercury Rev fans will be able to drool over for quite some time.
