Ever listen to dub reggae? Well, you can pretty much thank Lee Perry for the sound that was coming out of the speakers, or for that matter, Perry himself probably produced the music. He has had his hands in Reggae since the 60’s, when he worked in Studio One apprenticing with Clement “Coxsone Dodd. From that point forward, reggae has never really sounded the same. The echoey sounds that are considered dub are a direct reflection of the experiments of Lee Perry. Baffling Smoke Signal has a number of artists including Devon Irons, The Congos, Leroy Sibbles, and the title track by Lee Perry himself. Consider this a rare collection that was recorded in the late 70’s and most of the tracks have been previously unavailable. The album highlight is the Leroy Sibbles’ “Garden of Life. Baffling Smoke Signal is a very strong record considering it’s obscurity. Reggae and dub fans alike will take full enjoyment in this Lee “Scratch Perry compilation.
