While Mutabaruka is no newbie to the reggae/poetry genre, it may be now that he is actually doing his best work. On Life Squared, Mutabaruka’s seventh studio album since 1983, he continues along the dub poetry path infused with black politics and it’s really nice to hear something a little different in the reggae field. The album includes the track that Mutabaruka did for Stephanie Black’s documentary entitled Life and Debt, a film that reveals the US’s international monetary policy. One of the album’s best tracks happens to be a tribute to one of Mutabaruka’s friends, Pele Lanier, simply entitled “Pele. Also, have a listen to “The Confession Today which uses a very clever sample from Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On. If you are sick and tired of listening to your room mates copy of Bob Marley’s Legend then go out and pick them up a copy of Mutabaruka’s Life Squared. It is sure to get them off of the old stuff.
