This Chapel Hill, NC band always provides a decent power pop album and Walking In A Straight Line is really no different. The Mayflies USA just seem to get better with age. Let’s get one thing straight, that doesn’t mean different. Four albums and there hasn’t been much of a change in direction but as they always say, if it ain’t broke… Walking In A Straight Line is as good a power pop album as one gets these days. It’s as if the Mayfly boys have been working at getting this pop sound perfected and this album is the result. It’s a sweet sugary affair that Matthew Sweet fans will eat up. The Mayflies are turning into America’s version of Teenage Fanclub; a band that keeps putting out quality material without really changing all that much. The band succeeds by never overpowering the listener and by weaving vocal harmonies in with some amazing but simple guitar riffs. It doesn’t take much effort to see the brilliance in this album. Alex Chilton, you inspired this!
