Rupert Westmore Grant (aka. Lord Invader) was a staple calypso performer in not only his native country of Trinidad but also New York. Calypso In New York was recorded for Moses Asch for his Folkways label between 1946 and 1961. The tracks are completely Lo-Fi complete with record scratchings on some tracks. The reason for this is that these are in most cases the only recordings of these Lord Invader tracks. In fact, half of them have never been released before this. Some of the tracks are with full accompaniment while others are very sparse. One classic moment catches the Invader with Pete Seeger. He was made infamous for his "Rum and Coca-Cola" song (sadly not on this album although a track called "Pepsi-Cola" is). Lord Invader has a great time while he is performing and most of the fun is apparent here.
