Cachaito was an album recommended to me by a friend (thanks Sam) and now I don’t know how I lived without it. Orlando Lopez is a mainstay in the Buena Vista Social Club scene but before you run away thinking, “I’ve heard enough from those guys, let me let you in on a little secret; Cachaito is a little different. Yes, it is still riddled with tasty Cuban beats but Orlando has something a little different in mind for you. As the bassist in the Social Club he hasn’t had all the creative freedom that he would have liked. On his debut album, Lopez stretches into the creative seat very nicely. Some tracks like “A Gozar El Tumbao hits an almost dub feel but still maintaining a superb Latin flavor. It sounds like he has been listening to artists like John Scofield and Medeski, Martin and Wood. There are Hammond organs abound and yes, there is even a bit of DJ scratching happening courtesy of French DJ, Dee Nasty. The songs sometimes have more of a jam feel to them but that’s what makes Cachaito different from some of the other Cuban projects. This is fun from beginning to end.
